Things to do in the spring
As winter fades away and spring starts to bloom, the Pacific Northwest comes alive
Embark on a delightful day trip from Oostema Farmstead to Nugent’s Corner River Access, situated approximately 15 miles southwest. The scenic drive from Lynden to Nugent’s Corner offers picturesque views of the enchanting countryside of Whatcom County. The journey through the region takes you past farmland and small towns, providing a glimpse into the bucolic splendor of the area.
Upon arrival at Nugent’s Corner, explore the River Access Trail, which grants easy access to the Nooksack River for activities such as fishing, kayaking, and swimming. The trail is a mere 0.1 miles one-way and is considered an easy hike. Starting from the southwest corner of the parking lot, the trail leads to the river access point. At the fork in the path, hikers can opt for either direction, as both lead to the river access point.
Once at the river, visitors can indulge in a variety of recreational activities, including fishing for salmon and steelhead. However, there are specific fishing regulations that visitors must check with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for the latest information. Additionally, kayaking and swimming are popular activities, but visitors should be cautious of the river’s strong currents and always wear appropriate safety gear, including life jackets.
Further down from the River Access Trail terminus, the Forest Loop Trail presents an additional opportunity for hiking and exploring the area. This trail is 0.4 miles long and winds through the forest and fields before returning to the parking area, totaling a distance of 0.5 miles.
If you’re up for more exploration, make a stop at Nooksack Falls or the charming city of Glacier, located just a short drive away from Nugent’s Corner. Overall, Nugent’s Corner River Access is a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking to relish the scenic beauty of the Nooksack River and the surrounding region.
